ELKINS -- Progress is being made on the decorations for Sprout into Spring, a new event being organized by by the same Our Town, Inc. volunteers who brought the scarecrow event and the gnomes to downtown Elkins in 2020.

The project will decorate Elkins with wooden flowers that can be painted and decorated by each participant in order to welcome spring to the community.

Art instructor Tessa Garver-Daniels will be taking the large cut-out flowers and stems to her classes at Elkins Middle School and Davis & Elkins College to have students design and paint them for the display throughout downtown Elkins.

The Sprout into Spring event will take place on the first day of spring, March 20.

On Feb. 19 and 20, 81 kits were provided to community members, teens, children, nonprofit organizations and businesses that demonstrated interest in and support of the project. The wooden plywood sheets, firring strips, paint samples and assembly accessories were provided by Elkins Builders Supply. The sheets were primed by volunteer employees of Elkins Builders.

Pieces were cut to dimension and shape by staff and volunteers from the Wood Technology Center. Committee members added decorative items.

The Delmonte Market provided space for distribution, collection and storage. All finished flowers are to be returned to the Delmonte on March 12 and 13. Regretfully, no further materials are available at this time, officials said.

"Everyone is encouraged to paint the flowers with spring colors and decorate to reflect your business, organization or with a spring theme," a press release states. "You may sign your work or include a logo. All creativity is encouraged but no political or controversial statements, please. Child and student art is encouraged.

"The flowers will be placed throughout town 'sprouting' from the parking poles and some colorful streamers will be added to the trees along Davis Avenue and Third Street, providing another open air viewing opportunity for everyone," the release states.
