County honors employee for helping victim

BUCKHANNON -- An Upshur County Courthouse employee was recognized by the Upshur County Commission for her role in helping care for a man who was hit by a car recently in Randolph County.
On Feb. 20, Prisilla Peggs and her husband, Jim, found themselves witnessing a pedestrian versus vehicle accident on the Beverly Pike Five-lane.
"We went for a drive that day and ended up in Elkins," she said. "We were at the stoplight and we were in a turning lane coming from Walmart to turn in to Go Mart."
During the red light a man walked across three lanes of traffic, but did not make it all the way across before the lights began turning green.
"He was right in front of our Jeep and the lights on that side started turning yellow," Peggs said. "My husband said, 'Oh my God, he is going to get hit.' My husband beeped the horn and he cleared our bumper. The car coming from the other side did not see him. Those are sounds and sights you never want to see. I will never forget them."
Peggs, a passenger in her vehicle, immediately leapt into action.
"I was out of the Jeep and around and at his side before the driver ever got out of his car," Peggs said.
At the same time, Peggs had called 911 and reported the collision.
Peggs said she got blankets out of the car to cover the victim, took his pulse and kept him talking.
"The paramedics got on scene and put him on a gurney," she said. "That was the last time I laid eyes on him."
Commissioner Kristie Tenney thanked Peggs for her efforts.
