ELKINS -- Elkins City Council has approved a $6.2 million general fund budget for the 2022 fiscal year.
The new budget is an increase of $407,774 over the 2021 budget, "due largely to indirect costs from Water, Sewer and Sanitation funds," City Treasurer Tracy Judy states in a letter included in an information packet distributed to council members.
"I have reviewed the prior three years and the average additional revenues for March through June are $1,626,716," the letter reads. "The average expenditures for the same period are $1,273,363. That may give us $353,353 additional revenues."
Judy said the top three highest department budgets contained within the new general fund budget are the Elkins Police Department, at just over $1.3 million; the streets department, at just over $951,000; and the Elkins Fire Department, at $913,000.

Elkins City Council has also approved a $5,500 Landfill Budget; and a Coal Severance Budget of $137,805, including $126,805 in Unencumbered Fund Balance, and $11,000 in Coal Severance Tax.
