High-speed chase leads to 2-hour stand-off

BUCKHANNON -- A Rock Cave man faces multiple charges after allegedly leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase and engaging in a stand-off with officers that lasted two hours before he set fire to the woods and was ultimately arrested.

Chad C. Newcome, 40, was arrested for armed robbery, fleeing with reckless indifference, driving revoked DUI third offense and wanton endangerment, all felonies. Magistrate Mark Davis set bond at $40,000.

The incident began at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, when Newcome, 40, allegedly confronted the owner of a 2018 Dodge Ramp truck at the Arlington Mini Mart with a shotgun, according to a press release from the Upshur County Sheriff's Department.

The Upshur County Sheriff's Department and Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police responded to the Gaines area, the release states. The WVSP located the vehicle within minutes and engaged in a high speed pursuit but the vehicle temporarily alluded officers.

As law enforcement from both agencies continued to search for the vehicle, it was found unoccupied down an unmaintained roadway in Goshen, the release states.

The officers were securing the area when Newcome fired a shot and engaged the officers in a threatening manner, according to the press release. A stand-off ensued for approximately two hours, after which Newcome set fire to the woods and fled deeper into the trees, with officers pursuing and Newcome continuing to fire shots.

A Taser was deployed and Newcome was taken into custody after dark, the release states.

The investigation showed that Newcome had also gone to a

residence occupied by his girlfriend, and that he had fired multiple shots into the residence and her vehicle, according to the press release.

The Barbour and Randolph detachments of the WVSP and Buckhannon Police Department responded to the scene.

Banks District Volunteer Fire Department and Upshur County EMS staged near the scene.
