ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission approved nearly $28,000 in spending Thursday for upgrades and repairs to the Randolph County Courthouse and the courthouse annex during Thursday's regular meeting.
The first item on the agenda was replacing the security cameras in both the courthouse and the annex. In the past six to nine months, both facilities ' cameras have stopped functioning.
"We knew that we needed to get our security coverage back in both buildings," Randolph County Commission President Mark Scott said. "Apparently when the server died in the buildings we lost everything."
The new camera system will also give officials the ability to easily monitor what is going on in both facilities through use of an iPad.
"This will bring everything up where our officers and court security can watch the cameras and if there is an issue, that way they can get to it instantly if something happens," said Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon. "And if we need to go back and look at something for any insurance purposes, we will have back-up coverage."
The commission voted unanimously to accept the quote from Digital Soup of Elkins to install 15 new security cameras and two WiFi iPad monitors at a price of $9,951.87.
Second on the list was the approval for updates to the ongoing construction to the Randolph County Clerk's office. Contractors recently hit a snag while doing renovations in that area of the building and more funds are needed in order to complete the project.
"We have been doing upgrades to the clerk's office and as a result of doing that work, the contractor pulled the drop ceiling down and realized the walls did not go all the way to the ceiling as they should," Scott said. "So we need to build the wall to extend to the ceiling. As you can imagine it's going to be quite a chore with 100-plus years worth of stuff there."
The commission unanimously approved payment in the amount of $2,475.48 to Hopes and Dreams Contracting, which is overseeing the project.
The third building improvement item on the agenda came in the form of the old 911 center, which is located inside the courthouse annex. The commission unanimously approved the amount of $7,544 to be paid to Hopes and Dreams Construction for a project to renovate the old facility.
"The old 911 center has been empty since they moved that office to their new location," Scott said.. "It has been in discussion almost ever since of what we were going to do with that area. We've decided to make it another part of the law enforcement division within the Randolph County Sheriff's Office."
The final facility improvement on the agenda was to replace equipment within the sheriff's office.
"The heating and air conditioning unit on the rooftop that provides air to the sheriff's office has been destroyed, basically," Scott said. "We don't know exactly what happened. But the condenser unit and coil is completely destroyed."
The commission unanimously approved payment in the amount of $7,936.20 to Casto Technical Services to fix the issue.
The next Randolph County Commission meeting will be March 18 at 1:30 p.m.
