ELKINS -- Spring Cleanup is wrapping up as City of Elkins Street Department crews put the finishing touches on the project that began on April 5 and ends on Friday.
"We are still working on the cleanup this week and we're going to finish it up on Friday," said Elkins Operations Manager Bob Pingley. "We started Monday in Third Ward and now we are in Fourth Ward for a couple of days. We will wrap it all up in Fifth Ward on Thursday and Friday."
As of Monday, the city had collected 78 tons of material from the Spring Cleanup so far. Local residents were allowed no more than one level pickup-truck load for each household. The cleanup, which is designed for residents to discard any unwanted items from their homes, garages, basements, and any other places where junk piles up, collected 15 tons of debris on the first day alone.
Pingley told The Inter-Mountain last week that he projected the numbers to be slightly higher this year. Mostly because of there not being a Spring Cleanup in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and with the weather conditions being ideal for people to empty out their garages and storage buildings.
For the last few days of the cleanup, residents are reminded to have all their discarded items at the curb in front of their house or building no later than 5:30 a.m. on the assigned day. Appliances, tires, free-flowing liquids, batteries, yard waste and loose trash will not be accepted.
