BUCKHANNON -- Retired Buckhannon Police Department officer Darrell Bennett has been named the city's 2021 Webb Grubb honoree.
Mayor Robbie Skinner and Buckhannon City Police Chief Matthew Gregory welcomed members of law enforcement and the community to the fourth annual Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Day.
In 2017, Buckhannon City Council "resolved to annually recognize, honor and pay tribute to all police officers on each Wednesday during the annual West Virginia Strawberry Festival."
Council also recognized Wilbert H. "Webb" Grubb, "the only City police officer ever to die in the line of duty who gave his lie for our community on April 21, 1940."
In 2018, the City honored former BPD Lieutenant Keith Rowan, and in 2019 recognized former BPD Police Chief Fred Gaudet.
This year, the fourth annual Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Day recognized retired BPD Lieutenant Darrell Bennett.
Also this year, the City dedicated its "Wall of Blue" in honor of and tribute to Grubb, Rowan, Gaudet, Bennett and "all of our future police officer honorees during Webb Grubb Police Officer Recognition Days to come," according to the mayor's proclamation for the event.
"Our Buckhannon-Upshur community is very proud and supportive of our police officers who serve and protect us all while placing their lives on the line during every one of the challenging and uncertain shifts they work," Skinner wrote in the proclamation.
