ELKINS -- A day that began with sunshine made a turn for the worse in the afternoon as severe thunderstorms swept through most of the region Monday.
Heavy rain and high winds resulted in downed trees and power outages were reported throughout most of the area.
Randolph County reported 715 customers without power at 4 p.m. in the afternoon. The heaviest-hit area in north central West Virginia was Upshur County, where 2,203 residents were without electricity. Tallmansville in Upshur County had 99 percent of its citizens without power.
At the same time, Barbour County had 738 residents without power, and the lights were off for 247 households in Pocahontas County.
Another band of thunderstorms are likely to pass through the area late this morning sometime between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Chance of precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible.
No rain is in the forecast for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. There is, however, a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms expected on Saturday and Sunday.
