Adaland Mansion hosts crowds for annual Sunday Buffet

PHILIPPI -- Adaland Mansion hosted crowds of happy, excited visitors Sunday during its annual Sunday Buffet.

"As we expected, reservations continued to fill up during this last week following the July 4th holiday," Adaland executive director JoLynn Powers said.

Each of the event's sittings could host up to 50 guests. After each of the first two sittings the foodservice staff reset the dining and buffet areas for diners later in the afternoon.

One milestone of the day was that it was the last Sunday Buffet to be prepared by long-time Adaland culinarian Lucy Williamson.

"This is Lucy's last year with us," Powers said. "She has been here a long time and is going to retire this year. If folks want to enjoy Lucy's cooking one more time at the mansion, they better get here soon."

The next opportunity for a full course meal prepared by Williamson at Adaland will be two murder mystery events in August. Interested parties can call 304-516-1124, or visit Adaland.org for more details.

The 23-room brick mansion, built in 1870, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has served as a tourist destination for more than 20 years.

The Adaland mansion has been restored with great attention to authenticity and features homemade brick and walnut woodwork throughout.

The Adaland property also features a barn that was built around 1850. It has also been restored and is open to the public during tour season.

Adaland also often hosts tours, weddings, receptions, anniversaries and other celebratory occasions.
