ELKINS -- Delegate William "Ty" Nestor said he is proud to be the first Republican elected to serve the vast majority of Randolph County as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates in approximately 112 years.
Nestor was elected to his first term in October 2020 representing the 43rd District. He said he recently learned that his election carried extra historical significance.
"A review by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History of the Blue Books -- compiled from 1908 to 2020 -- revealed that there had never been a Republican Randolph County delegate representing Randolph County during this timeframe," Nestor communicated to The Inter-Mountain. "The only exception being that of the areas of Pickens and Helvetia are currently being represented by Delegate Caleb Hanna, since 2018."
District 43 encompasses all but the Pickens and Helvetia areas of Randolph County and the entirety of Pocahontas County.
"It is a tremendous honor to serve the people of Randolph and Pocahontas counties," Nestor said. "I am humbled to become the first Republican delegate from Randolph County to serve that county in such a long time.
"I recognize that the voters put their trust in me to represent them. I owe the people who elected me, and I am not going to let them down. I know that I will have to continue to work hard and be responsible so that I can provide them with comfort they deserve with the decision that they made."
District 43 is a two-member district currently represented by Nestor, a lawyer and businessman, and Democratic Delegate Cody Thompson, a public educator.
On Feb. 10, the House of Delegates commenced the 85th legislative session, and Nestor was assigned to the House Judiciary Committee. He was also selected to serve on the Committee for Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security and the Interstate Cooperation Committee.
During the legislative session, Nestor supported passing legislation protecting the rights of unborn children with the Second Chance at Life Bill; providing additional benefits to veterans of the United States military, and their spouses, by making it easier for them to start in business; establishing a uniform process to rid the region of vacant and unsanitary properties with the implementation of the Zombie Property Remediation Act; and protecting the Second Amendment rights of West Virginia gun owners with the passage of a 2A sanctuary/non-commandeering bill.
Nestor is presently the lead sponsor of House Bill 2580, which would mandate that higher ethical guidelines be followed by judges, and H.B. 2629, which would provide free hunting, fishing and trapping privileges to all West Virginia veterans who have been honorably discharged, or who have been administratively discharged under honorable conditions. He is also a co-sponsor of 12 other bills -- one of which exempts motor vehicles from personal property tax.
Nestor is the founder of The Nestor Law Office and a principal of Tygart Valley Distributors, Inc., located in Elkins. He is a member of the Randolph and Pocahontas County Chambers of Commerce and resides in Elkins with his family, Samantha and Jack.
