BUCKHANNON -- A Monday evening fire on the West Virginia Wesleyan College campus has been determined to be "electrical in nature," school officials said.
No one was injured in the blaze, and officials are still unsure how much damage the school's Physical Plant building sustained.
"West Virginia Wesleyan College is grateful for the quick response to the Physical Plant fire Monday evening from fire units in a four-county area," a WVWC press release stated Tuesday afternoon.
"The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's office has ruled the probable cause to be electrical in nature. The amount of damage is not known at this time," the release continues.
"The fire originated in the carpentry shop, which sustained the most damage. Physical Plant offices have temporarily relocated on campus until repairs can be made to the building."
The school also offers thanks to the Buckhannon Fire Department, Warren District Volunteer Fire Department, Washington District Volunteer Fire Company, Adrian Volunteer Fire Department, Ellamore Volunteer Fire Department, Weston Volunteer Fire Department, Jane Lew Fire Department, Elkins Fire Department, Junior Volunteer Fire Department, Philippi Volunteer Fire Department, Upshur County EMS and Buckhannon Police Department for their assistance.
The fire in the building began around 8 p.m. Monday. Trucks and fire fighters from four counties quickly were on scene fighting the blaze.
Media reports say the building contains explosive materials, so onlookers were kept at a safe distance by emergency personnel Monday evening.
The physical plant is located next to the WVWC's baseball field.
Emergency crews battled the blaze for several hours Monday evening.
