BELINGTON — State officials have determined that a structure fire in Belington was the result of arson.

The blaze, at a home on the corner of Hetzel Avenue and Shank Street, was reported at 5:40 a.m. Sunday morning, according to a Wednesday press release from the Belington Volunteer Fire Department.

“Firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:42 a.m. to a single story vacant structure heavily involved,” the release states. “A water supply was established with a 500-foot lay of 4-inch hose, using a master stream. The bulk of the fire was contained, then extinguished, using two 1 3/4 hand lines.”

At the scene to assist the Belington VFD were the Junior, Philippi and Coalton volunteer fire departments.

“One (firefighter) suffered a medical emergency and was transported to Broaddus Hospital, where he was evaluated, treated, then later released,” the release states.

The home in Belington shows the damages from the blaze in the days after the structure fire.

“On Tuesday morning, the scene was inspected by a representative of the West Virginia State Fire Marshals Office. The cause of the fire was determined to be arson.
