BOWDEN -- The death of a woman whose body was pulled from the Shaver's Fork River Wednesday morning is now believed by officials to have been a suicide.
On Wednesday, Deputy A.M. Channell responded to the call about a 65-year-old woman who had "been in declining health for some time" who had left a note for her companion saying "she was going to harm herself," according to a Thursday press release from Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon.
The woman's vehicle was found at the gate to Shavers Fork Campground, the release states, adding "deputies located a hat and cane sitting on a rock ledge above a known swimming hole."
The Elkins Fire Department Dive Team was called to the scene to assist in searching the river "which was now elevated due to the rain of the last two days," the release states. "Shortly after entry in the river, the body of the victim was located."
"Further investigation resulted in video surveillance of the victim arriving alone in her vehicle," according to the release. "She exited her vehicle, gathered her cane and walked out of sight toward the river."
"All evidence leads the investigator to believe that this was a suicide and there is no foul play involved in this incident," Elbon said in the release.
