Domestic call ends peacefully in Harding

HARDING -- Local law enforcement officers defused a standoff situation after receiving reports of an individual firing a shotgun and locking himself inside a house on Harding Road in Randolph County Thursday afternoon.
Officers representing the West Virginia State Police, the Elkins Police Department and the Randolph County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene after a woman called 911 in reference to a domestic situation.
Once on scene, Randolph County Sheriff's Department officers saw an individual going inside the house, officials said. Officers told the individual over a loudspeaker to come out.
The individual exited the home and told police she was the grandmother of the suspect, officials said. She also told officers the suspect was inside and that he had a shotgun and he had fired a shot.
"We basically secured the scene for the state police, who got the call," Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon told The Inter-Mountain.
"After talking to the grandmother, I asked for a negotiator to come and talk to the suspect," he said. "The Elkins City Police sent one down also.
"The ATF (federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) showed up because they were in town. They had a negotiator as well. So they all talked to him and finally got him to come out."
Elbon said the West Virginia State Police are investigating the matter and had executed a search warrant.
The suspect was arrested at the scene but no further information -- including the suspect's name or any possible charges -- was available at press time, the sheriff stated.
"Nobody got hurt and it all worked out for the good," Elbon said. "And that's all we want, we just want everybody to be safe."
