Our Town Inc. named Extra Mile Heroes

By Edgar Kelley 2 min read

ELKINS -- Our Town Inc. was one of three local winners of the Extra Mile Hero Award, recently presented by Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco.

Extra Mile America, the organization coordinating this program, said the purpose of Extra Mile Day is to celebrate the capacity everyone has to create positive change in their families, organizations and communities by "going the extra mile."

More than 20 local people or organizations were nominated for the honor, which is awarded to those who go the extra mile in heart, mind and action.

"Our Town really goes above and beyond with the things they do in our community," Marco told The Inter-Mountain. "They are constantly doing something to help beautify and promote the town of Elkins. I truly appreciated all the hard work they do each and every day."

Our Town Inc. and its group of volunteers works to improve the Elkins area by celebrating the arts, promoting community-building activities and organizing public festivals and entertainment events.

It works with many different organizations to bring interest and enjoyment to the downtown area. Each year they place decorative scarecrows and gnomes throughout town for people to enjoy.

They go the extra mile by sweeping dirt from the sidewalks or storefronts, pulling weeds and talking to out-of-town visitors about Elkins and what it has to offer.

On Nov. 1, 528 cities across the United States, including Elkins, declared that day as Extra Mile Day in their city. Extra Mile Day celebrates the capacity we each have to create positive change in families, organizations, communities and ourselves when we "go the extra mile."

The day is set aside to honor individuals and organizations who are "going the extra mile" in volunteerism and service to make the world a bit better for the rest of us.

The Inter-Mountain will publish an article about the third local Extra Mile Hero Award winners in a coming edition.
