ELKINS -- Three candidates have filed to run for the Randolph County Commission, while two have filed to run for the Randolph County Board of Education in the May 10 primary election.
Democrat Robert "Bob" Jones filed in recent days for the open county commission seat, joining Democrat Carol Cain Bush and Republican Chris Siler, who filed on the first day of the filing period. Siler was appointed to the Randolph County Commission back in November to replace Mark Scott, who took a job in Gov. Jim Justice's administration.
Charles "Randy' Long has filed in the past week for the Randolph County Board of Education, joining Caleb Vandvender, who filed on the first day of the filing period.
Siler will also be on the ballot for Republican Executive Committee, while Judy Guye has filed for Democratic Executive Committee.
Incumbent Randolph County Circuit Clerk Phil Riggleman and incumbent Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman both filed to run for re-election on the first day of the filing period, Jan. 10.
Ballot commissioners for the 2022 election cycle were appointed by the Randolph County Commision Thursday during its regular meeting at the James F. Cain Courthouse Annex.
Patricia Rossi was nominated by the Democratic Executive Committee for the position, while Sandra Hogan was hand-picked by the Republican Executive Committee. The commission voted unanimously to approve both nominees.
"This is something we have to do every election," Wiseman said of appointing the ballot commissioners. "The ballot commissioners serve a two-year term and they approve the ballots once everyone files to run.
"Once the ballots are printed and sent back, I call them in to go over and approve everything before it's sent into final printing and programming into the machines. On election night they also oversee and make sure everything is being counted and tallied properly."
Races in the May primary include two U.S. House of Representative districts; 17 seats in the West Virginia Senate; 100 house of Delegates seats; county commission seats; county boards of education seats; and local conservation districts.
Candidates must pay a filing fee with the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office before the Jan. 29 midnight deadline.
