PBHS players help clear snow after winter storm

BELINGTON -- A group of high school athletes brought smiles to local faces last week by helping area residents dig out from the heavy snow dumped on the region by the year's first winter storm.
Philip Barbour High School student athletes on the Colts' football squad were out of bed early to participate in snow removal Friday morning in the Belington area of Barbour County.
"They were voluntarily shoveling snow off of sidewalks in Belington after they shoveled some snow for a local business," PBHS head football coach Nick Mayle told The Inter-Mountain. "Their example led to several people contacting me to see if they could get some help as well.
"These kids stepped up to help today," Mayle said.
The young athletes were able to assist several residents during their efforts Friday morning.
"One young man shoveled the driveway of a shut-in that was in poor health in case of an emergency," Mayle said. "The city gym walkways were cleared, and the walkway and driveway of an elderly woman worried about not being able to get out to attend a funeral were cleared."
"I am a humble person but I will brag on these kids all day," Mayle said. "I am very proud of them."
Area residents woke up to an abundance of snow Friday morning, as the first major winter storm of the season swept into the area Thursday and continued to produce accumulation through the night.
Belington saw 7.5 inches of snow from the storm, according to the National Weather Service, while Philippi received 8.1 inches of snow.
Mill Creek received the most snowfall in the area, as it was hit with 14.5 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Coalton saw 14 inches of snow, while Beverly had 11.5 and Elkins 10. Buckhannon received 10 inches of snow, while Parsons saw 9.5 inches of snow.
Philip Barbour garnered two wins on the gridiron in 2021, including a forfeit from Petersburg and a home win over a heavily depleted Elkins squad.
Continuing strength and conditioning work with the athletes during the offseason, Philip Barbour has partnered with Viking Performance to help in the weight room.
