ELKINS -- A traffic stop conducted by the Elkins City Police on Monday allegedly led to the recovery of more than 10 grams of fentanyl.
Jonathan Williams Harris, 37, was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance (fentanyl). He is being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Ben Shepler.
Corporal D.T. Sayre pulled the defendant's Jeep Liberty over Monday and conducted a search of the vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.
After Harris and two passengers in the Jeep were detained, officers on the scene assisting Sayre in the search located a lock box under the driver's side seat, the complaint states. Inside the box was a red plastic baggy that contained a white powdery substance consistent with fentanyl. Some of the contents of the bag had spilled in the bottom of the box.
An additional baggie that contained the same substance, a half of a white pill and a spent .22 caliber casing were also found in the top of the box, the police report states. During the search, a sandwich bag with the substance was also found along with a digital scale that was covered in a white powdery substance.
Harris told police that the substance on the scales was powdered sugar and that he used it to mix with the substance believed to be fentanyl so as "not to hurt people." Harris stated that he needed the scale to "weigh the stuff" he had purchased, according to the complaint.
