BEVERLY -- A Randolph County man is behind bars after allegedly leading police on a car chase from Beverly across Rich Mountain and into Coalton Wednesday evening.
Tony Allen McClung, 36, has been charged with two felonies, driving revoked for DUI -- third offense, and fleeing with reckless indifference.
He is lodged in the Tygarts Valley Regional Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Mike Dyer.
At approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday, West Virginia State Police Trooper E.B. Malcomb was conducting routine patrol of U.S. 219 in the Beverly area when the officer approached a silver GMC truck that drastically reduced its speed below the speed limit once seeing the patrol unit, according to the criminal complaint.
Malcomb considered this action to be suspicious in nature and ran the registration of the truck, which came back as belonging to a Hyundai Sante Fe, the complaint states. The officer flashed the unit's emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop.
The truck, which began to flee, ran through a stop sign at the intersection of the Coalton-Pumpkintown Road and County Route 151 and another stop sign as well, and crossed left of center on multiple occasions, according to the police report.
The truck continued to flee until around 5:30 p.m., when the driver stopped the vehicle on Kings Summit Road, approximately .2 miles south of the US 48 intersection. The driver of the vehicle was identified as McClung, the complaint states.
A passenger in the vehicle told police that he advised McClung to stop multiple times. The passenger told police that he recently had heart surgery and McClung was supposed to be taking him to get groceries, according to the complaint.
McClung was taken to the WVSP Elkins detachment for processing. At this time officers found that McClung had a suspended drivers license due to an active aggravated DUI conviction, the complaint states. Officers also found that McClung had two more previous convictions for driving revoked DUI. Police also found a bag housing multiple pills within McClung's vehicle.
