Thierstein
BUCKHANNON -- Dr. Joel Thierstein is no longer the president of West Virginia Wesleyan College, officials announced Thursday.
Dr. James Moore has been named the interim president of WVWC, according to a statement released by the college.
"We are optimistic that Dr. Moore's leadership, skills, experience and enthusiasm will enable the college to continue on a path to success for every member of the college's community," the statement reads.
No reason for the change was announced. The statement notes that "the college appreciates Dr. Thierstein's service."
Thierstein was named the school's 19th president in October 2016. He succeeded Dr. Pamela Balch, who had been the college's president since 2006.
Thierstein earned a Ph.D., master of science and bachelor of science in mass communications from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He also holds a J.D. from Syracuse University, E.I. White College of Law.
Thierstein served as a provost and vice president for academic affairs at Kentucky State University, the associate provost at Rice University and executive director of Connexions, professor and administrator at Oregon State University and Baylor University, a professor at Purdue University Calumet and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and a visiting professor of Communications Law at Syracuse University.
In 2011, Thierstein began his work under the Under Secretary of the United States Department of Education as Senior Advisor. During that time, he worked to develop policy in several areas including open education, alternative credentialing, assessment and accreditation.
