Elkins Council to discuss budget changes tonight

ELKINS — Elkins City Council will consider the proposed Fiscal Year 2023 city budget during its regular meeting at City Hall tonight.

This week, various individuals have contacted The Inter-Mountain saying that some well-known local agencies may be in danger of losing their funding from the city.

The Inter-Mountain reached out to Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco, who declined to discuss specifics but noted that some hard financial decisions may have to be made by the city.

“At this point nothing is finalized, but we are taking a look at some areas where we may be able to make some adjustments,” Marco told The Inter-Mountain.

“Right now the price of everything is going up and we have to make sure we are able to pay our bills,” the mayor said. “It’s a trying time and we want the citizens of Elkins to be able to get all the services they deserve. So we are going to have to look at some things and figure out where we can save some money.”

The agenda for tonight’s meeting lists no specifics other than “Consideration of Proposed FY23 Budget” being listed under New Business.

Also on the agenda under New Business is “Discussion of Ad-hoc ARPA Advisory Committee Recommendations.”

The city was awarded $3.08 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding. Elkins City Council has decided to allot 5% — approximately $154,000 — to be used for eligible community-based requests. The city accepted applications for projects that may qualify for the funding through the end of February.

In addition to the influx of the ARPA funding, the City of Elkins’ revenue from the 1% sales tax grew more than 10% in 2021.

The city took in $1,410,563 from the sales tax in 2021, up nearly 11% from the 2020 total of $1,272,938, officials said.

The 2021 figures represent an almost 25 percent increase since 2019, when the city took in $1,136,178. 2019 was the first full year of sales tax revenues for the City of Elkins.

Tonight’s Elkins City Council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Starting at $3.92/week.
