PHILIPPI -- Volunteers are being sought to help out with a newly introduced event that will be offered during the annual Blue and Gray Reunion this summer in the historic town of Philippi.
The first-ever Blue and Gray Reunion Boy Scout Camporee is scheduled to take place on June 2 through June 5.
The City of Philippi, the Boy Scout Mountaineer Area Council and the Blue Gray Reunion Committee are hosting the event, which will be under the direction of Camporee President Sam Muncy.
Muncy is making a "call to arms" for citizens to join the committee and help set up and manage the camporee.
"For any Civil War and scouting enthusiasts, this is an opportunity to enhance the heritage of Philippi as the site of the first land battle of the Civil War," Muncy told The Inter-Mountain. "This is also an opportunity to be part of the first of many annual camporee events of the Blue and Gray Reunion Boy Scout Camporee."
The camporee site will be located past the North Philippi Park and beside the Philippi Waste Water Treatment Plant.
"Before people start asking if we are crazy for having it at that location because it stinks, I want to tell them that it does not," Muncy said. "It is one of the cleanest facilities in the state and that is coming from myself, who has 40 years of civil engineering experience."
Each year the Blue and Gray Reunion includes crafts tents, a parade, encampments for reenactors from both sides of the war, artillery and small arms demonstrations, a choir concert, a Civil War Ball, and of course, a re-enactment of the first land battle of the Civil War.
