Emergency crews worked to put out flaming bales of hay on Harrison Avenue in Elkins at about 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Deputy James Wolfe saw smoke coming from hay bales on the back of a truck and trailer and initiated a traffic stop across from Scottie’s Restaurant. While Wolfe was speaking to the driver, “the hay caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames,” Wolfe wrote in the police report. The trailer was detached from the truck, and the vehicle was moved to a safe location. The Elkins Fire Department put out the fire, shown above, and the Elkins Police Department assisted at the scene.
