Randolph man charged with second-degree murder

ELKINS – A Randolph County man was arrested and has been charged with second-degree murder after an incident Monday evening on Chenoweth Creek Road.

Stephen Ray Cross, 54, was taken into custody after a shooting that took the life of Jonathan Chenoweth, Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said.

Cross was transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail, where he is awaiting arraignment.

According to the criminal complaint, on Monday at approximately 5:05 p.m., officers with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police responded to a call of shots fired at 5185 Chenoweth Creek Road.

Once on scene, officers found Chenoweth slumped over the center console of a UTV, which had at least three bullet holes through the front windshield, according to the complaint.

Police spoke to Cross, who was inside a residence on the property. He came out of the residence and was detained by officers before being transported to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office for an interview. Cross declined to speak with officers and asked for an attorney, the complaint states.

Shell casings for seven rounds from a 9 mm gun were found on scene, and the alleged victim was struck by five bullets, police said.

The case is still under investigation by the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force. Anyone who may have information about the case is asked to call 911.
