Davis & Elkins students make presentations at Kump Center

ELKINS -- A group of Davis & Elkins College students presented and displayed their final college projects during the annual Kump Educational Research Seminar held Wednesday evening.
The event was held at the Kump Education Center and featured graduating seniors from D&E, all of which will be embarking on teaching professions in the near future. Each student gave their final capstone presentation to those who attended the event.
"Having the students come to the Kump Center and present their capstones was exciting for us," said Nanci Bross-Fregonara, communication specialist for the Kump Center. "It was special for them because they got to share their projects with other education majors, along with other friends and family members in their own space, in their own time. The entire Kump Center board was also there to take a look at the work the students did."
This was the 13th straight year that the annual seminar invited students to share their classroom experiences with other students, faculty members, and the public.
"For those who attended the event, they really got to understand what the students' research was all about," said Bross-Fregonara. "All of the students' projects were full of information and one of the things that impressed me was the hands-on active learning they did. They walked around the room and presented things orally -- it was really fascinating."
Students presented their final projects as well as a research exploration that centered on their experiences in local classrooms. Areas of focus were math, language arts and social studies.
"The students we hosted are going to be awesome teachers when they enter the classroom," said Bross-Fregonara. "Most of them have already done student teaching in Randolph County Schools, so they are well prepared for the future."
The Kump Education Center provides professional development for teachers, outdoor education opportunities, and historic restoration guidance. The KEC works with several groups to provide quality hands-on science curriculum.
Recent KEC summer programming with the Elkins Randolph County YMCA and the Randolph County SOLE program included tours of the wetlands, Project WILD, and Project Learning Tree activities.
The KEC also offers 10 weeks of after school tutoring on basic math and reading skills, which will help prepare fourth and fifth-grade students for year-end testing. Trained tutors provide one-on-one assistance to students who their teachers recommended. The tutoring takes place in the Altice Learning Lab at the Kump Education Center.
The Optimum Learning Lab at KEC provides a workspace with wifi, computers, worktables and projector. It is the perfect place for small workshops and allows for an indoor option when combined with outdoor education.
