Elkins High senior is honored in Eagle Scout ceremony

ELKINS -- A local student recently earned top honors with his Boy Scout troop when he was awarded Eagle Scout status during a ceremony at the Alliance Church in Gilman.
Caleb Seel, an 18-year-old senior at Elkins High School, recently completed a project that was the final step in his earning the prestigious Eagle Scout designation with the Boy Scouts.
"Caleb did a really good job and he put in a lot of hard work, not only on the project, but a lot of volunteer hours in the years leading up to it," Troop 88 Scout Master John DiBacco said. "He participated in a lot of troop activities and has been very active within the group.
"It's great to see him go through the process. He's a good kid with good character. He's also a very hard worker -- I'm really proud of him."
DiBacco said he has worked with Seel ever since he started the scouts as a 12-year-old. Up to that point, Seel had spent several years in the Cub Scouts before going through a crossover process that moved him to the Boy Scouts.
"Becoming an Eagle Scout is not an easy process," DiBacco said. "A relatively small number of Boy Scouts make it to the point of being one. It's really an honor for him to make it through the final part of the process and to get the award. Over the years, Caleb has given a lot of service to the community and to the Troop itself."
The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held at the church attended by Seel and his family. His project included the construction of a playground to benefit the younger children who attend the Alliance Church.
As part of Seel's project, he painted a four-square and hopscotch play section for the children at an outside area at the church. Being in the Carpentry Class at Elkins High School, he had the necessary resources to also allow him to build a bench that includes a storage compartment for play equipment.
Seel is the son of Karen and Charles Seel of Gilman. He has one brother, Charlie, and a sister, Emily. He plans on attending Davis & Elkins College after graduation.
"He was excited the other day when one of the groups at the church went out to use his playground area," Seel's mother, Karen, said. "He was happy that they were using his project. With the weather getting better, I'm sure it will be getting a lot more use."
Seel also played soccer at Elkins High School and is heavily involved with Alliance Church's AWANA Program, which provides learning activities for children. He will be a member of this year's graduating class at EHS.
