TENNERTON -- The Tennerton Lions Club is giving seniors at Buckhannon-Upshur High School a chance to earn a scholarship to help further their education.
Each year TLC awards a $600 scholarship to graduates of B-UHS who are enrolled or have been accepted to a university, college, junior college or an approved technical program.
"We've been handing this scholarship out for several years now and it's just another way that we can give back to the community," TLC member Harry Craig told The Inter-Mountain. "The whole idea of the Lions Club is to give back, and part of that is promoting education. We are happy that we are able to help."
The Lions Club is currently accepting applications for students who are interested in the scholarship. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is May 1. B-UHS students can attain an application from their school counselor or by going to the high school's website.
"Students can fill out the application with their school counselors, who will submit it to us," Craig said. "The scholarship committee will then review it and pick our winner. We read each application individually and then score all of the ones that we have. We don't see any sheets until the very end and the individual with the most points gets the scholarship."
Considerations for the scholarship will be based on academic achievement (3.0 grade-point average or better), student citizenship, community service and participation, financial need, and being a member of the Leo Club or Lions Club. Being a member is not required to win, however.
Craig said the organization received a lot of applications for the scholarship last year, and noted things are off to a good start already this year.
"Last year I thought I'd never get through reading them all," Craig said. "I'm not really sure how many we have already this year, but there is still time for students to apply. The more we get, the better."
Most community projects conducted by the Lions have to do with supporting local children and schools. Whether it be through scholarships, recreation or mentoring, the organization strives to help local youth as much as possible.
The organization's Leo Program provides youth with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. There are approximately 144,000 Leos and 5,700 Leo Clubs in more than 140 countries worldwide.
Funds from the Tennerton Lions Club Scholarship will be paid in two installments, $300 for the first semester, and $300 for the second. For more information contact the Tennerton Lions Club at 304-476-4476.
