ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission approved pay application No. 9 for the county's pool/splash pad project this week during its regular meeting at the James F. Cain Courthouse Annex.
Commissioners David Kesling and Cris Siler, who were present at the meeting, voted to approve the most recent payment of $237,212.41. That money will be taken from the coal severance fund.
"A lot of stuff has been accomplished this past week at the pool," Kesling said. "We have our final health inspection on Monday and the Elks have a work party scheduled for Saturday to finish putting the picnic tables out, getting the lounge chairs in place, and things like that. When the health inspector comes, everything has to be in place like it will be when we officially open."
The facility, which will be called the Randolph County Community Pool and Splash Pad, is located at the Elks Lodge on Country Club Road. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the pool will take place on the Friday before Memorial Day, May 26. The pool will officially be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. the following day.
"Other than what the Elks are doing on Saturday, there are just a few little things left to do before the grand opening," Kesling said. "We have Heather (Johnson) finishing the painting of the bathhouse this weekend and Zach Elbon from Emblazon will be there installing all the signs that need to be put up. We are looking forward to the inspection on Monday and the opening the following weekend."
Officials formally broke ground on the pool/splash pad project on July 8, 2022. The total cost for the project has a price tag of $2,163,372 and the construction has been completed by Danhill Construction.
Back in 2020, engineering and planning firm E.L. Robinson was hired to create the project's design. After Thursday's payment, the balance to completion on the project is now $355,724.22.
Last month officials announced the prices and schedule for the pool/splash pad. The pool will be open Monday through Friday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, it will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
There will be no refund for weather or ejections from the facility, and children 11 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult. The pool/splash pad will also be available to rent for parties. Any parties must be scheduled during times in the evening when the pool is not open to the public, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The facility will be open through Labor Day.
