Garden Club celebrates Arbor Day

BUCKHANNON -- On April 28, members of the Fred Brooks Garden Club gathered to celebrate Arbor Day.
With the assistance of members of the Streets Department, the club planted a pink dogwood tree. FBGC President Beth Post shared some of the positive results of planting trees, including: cleaning the air, providing oxygen, helping to clean drinking water, cooling air and surface temperatures, reducing the effects of climate change, saving energy, benefitting wildlife and increasing property values.
The club dedicated a service berry tree to long-time FBGC member Leona Goff, who passed away in 2022.
Members commented on her positive influence and service to her community, including working with the Boy Scouts of America.
Goff was instrumental in bringing two Blue Star Markers to Upshur County. Stephen Goff, Mrs. Goff's son, and two of her caretakers also remembered her kindness and humor.
Fred Brooks Garden Club in Buckhannon was organized in 1937 and federated in 1938.
The club takes its name from Fred Brooks, from French Creek, a noted photographer and naturalist. Brooks Hall on WVU's campus is named for the scientific contributions of the entire Brooks family.
