ELKINS -- The Norton-Jimtown Public Service District's sewer project is one of five in the state that will receive funding from the West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council.
During its recent meeting, the WVIJDC approved a $532,000 grant to the Norton-Jimtown PSD to extend sewer service to 43 homes in the Norton area. This grant and funds from the USDA will provide $1.85 million for the project.
The Norton-Jimtown PSD currently provides service to more than 700 families in its PSD area. It also serves close to 400 Barbour County residents in the town of Junior, and provides water to the Randolph County Regional Jail.
Last summer, the Randolph County Commission awarded $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding to the Norton-Jimtown PSD. Those funds are going toward the construction of a new $10 million water treatment plant, along with improvements to its distribution system.
The other four sewer projects receiving funding included the Town of Barrackville, Buffalo Creek PSD, Cowen PSD, and Craigsville PSD. The Central Hampshire PSD received funding for a water project.
The council also approved technical reviews and requests to pursue funding for an additional six sewer and water projects. The six projects found to be technically feasible and approved to pursue funding, include the Pendleton County PSD, which is seeking funding for a water line extension project. The project will serve nine homes along Route 220, and the estimated cost is $3.3 million.
The approval of the six reviews and requests helps cities, municipalities and public service districts save taxpayer money and keep their water and sewer projects moving. The Infrastructure Fund is administered by the West Virginia Water Development Authority and WDA services bonds and loans are made at the direction of the Council for IJDC.
The WVIJDC was created by the West Virginia Legislature in 1994 to serve as a funding clearinghouse for water and wastewater projects around the Mountain State. Gov. Jim Justice serves as council chairman with Deputy Chief of Staff Ann Urling serving as his designee.
