PBHS grad named WVU music scholar

MORGANTOWN -- A Philip Barbour High School graduate has been honored with a prestigious award at West Virginia University.
Jakob Baker, of Philippi, has been named the WVU School of Music's newest Presser Undergraduate Scholar. The award is for approximately $4,000, and the recipient, in his senior year, will be known as a Presser Scholar.
The Trustees of The Presser Foundation established the Undergraduate Scholar Award to honor exceptional students pursuing studies in music.
Selected by the music faculty, the Award recipient must show a high level of academic and musical accomplishment and embody the qualities of leadership and citizenship. The recipient is one who has grown individually and who has contributed earnestly to the success of the School of Music, officials said.
Baker is pursuing a degree in Music Education and a minor in Music Industry. He is a member of the University's Honors College and Collegiate chapter of NAfME.
During his time at WVU, Baker has been a member of the University's Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, where he has held Principal Trombone positions.
Now completing his third year of study, Baker has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his time at WVU. Baker's primary teachers include Mr. Hakeem Bilal, Dr. Timothy DeWitt and Mr. Clayton Heath.
Baker gave a guest performance in April during Philip Barbour High School's Spring Concert.
