ELKINS -- The Randolph County Commission will receive $100,000 in West Virginia Community Corrections Grant program funding after Gov. Jim Justice announced $5.4 million in funding for 30 projects statewide.
"We're happy the governor has continued to support our program," North Central Community Corrections Regional Director Erin Golden told The Inter-Mountain, "The state has been funding us for 18 years. We appreciate the support. It's very competitive nowadays. There's only so much money the state can give, so we appreciate Gov. Justice's support."
Justice announced June 7 that he awarded $5,472,061 in West Virginia Community Corrections Grant program funds to 30 projects. These funds are meant to assist counties in instituting and continuing operation of community corrections programs in their area.
Other county commissions in the region receiving funds from the program for their community corrections programs include the Pocahontas County Commission, $51,000; the Taylor County Commission -- $120,000, for Taylor and Barbour counties; the Tucker County Commission -- $148,000; and the Upshur County Commission -- $161,500, for Upshur and Lewis counties.
Justice's release stated that, "The West Virginia Community Corrections Grant Program is intended to provide a means for communities to develop, establish, and maintain community-based corrections programs to provide the judicial system with sentencing alternatives for those offenders who may require less than institutional custody."
Funds were administered by the Justice and Community Services (JCS) Section of the West Virginia Division of Administrative Services (DAS).
