ELKINS -- Each summer during the months of June and July, Walmart stores across the United States raise money for the Children's Miracle Network, and this past holiday weekend the Elkins location did its part to lend a hand.

The Elkins store, which is located on the Beverly Five-lane, hosted a bash on Saturday that featured a total of 43 automobiles in a Car Show that was part of the celebration.

Michael Bonnett & River's Edge also performed in the parking lot of the store, and a host of food vendors were scattered among the many spectators who attended the event.

The Children's Miracle Network takes all of the money raised from the event and donates it to local children's hospitals. The WVU Medical Children's Hospital in Morgantown and the Hoops Family Children's Hospital in Huntington will receive the funds from the Elkins event.

WVU Medicine Children's Hospital is the largest hospital of its type in West Virginia. It offers expertise in nearly every childhood condition, no matter how rare or serious. In September of last year, the Children's Hospital opened a new nine-story, 150-bed, state-of-the-art facility in Morgantown.

Staff members of the Elkins Walmart were recently able to tour the new hospital facility and were struck by how each floor is dedicated to a different field, officials said. Several of the employees talked about how impressed they were with the Jeff Hostetler floor, which is named after the former WVU and NFL quarterback. The hospital has a special place in Hostetler's heart because his own children were patients there at one time.

The Hostetler floor features an area with a large-screen TV where sick children and their families can take a break and enjoy a movie night. There is also an area to play games, and laundry service is available for families.

The Hoops Family Children's Hospital, meanwhile, is a 72-bed children's hospital located on the fifth floor of Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington. The hospital includes a 36-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 25-bed General Pediatrics Unit, a 10-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a Neonatal Therapeutic Unit.

As part of the campaign, the Elkins Walmart will continue to raise money through July 14. Customers can donate money at any register at the facility. If the store breaks the $20,000 mark before the ending date, an assistant manager at Elkins Walmart has pledged to let her co-workers shave her head, officials said.
