Harman VFD Fourth of July activities set
ELKINS — The Harman Volunteer Fire Department annually hosts one of the bigger Fourth of July celebrations in the area, and organizers of the event say this year will be no exception.
“We always have a lot going on for the Fourth of July and this year is no different,” Harman VFD President Scott Shomo told The Inter-Mountain. “We’ve been having this celebration for four or five years now and we try to have a lot of things for people to do when they come out to celebrate the Fourth.”
Unlike many Independence Day celebrations which will be held during the weekend before the Fourth of July, the Harman event, which will take place at the Fire Hall, will take place on the actual holiday, despite it being on a Tuesday.
“We always have it on the Fourth of July, no matter what day of the week it falls on,” said Shomo.
The celebration will get underway at 9 a.m. with a host of events scheduled, including the flea market/yard sale that will feature vendors, crafters and others wishing to sell items.
The Car and Tractor Show will also begin at 9 a.m. and the food trucks will open for business at the same time. DJ Robert Phillips will begin playing music that will continue throughout the day, and at 9 a.m. the bouncy houses will open for children.
A Chicken Barbecue Dinner consisting of a half chicken, a roll and water will be available for those attending.
The annual Fourth of July Parade will begin at 1 p.m. and face paintings for kids will take place at its conclusion. The parade will begin at Roys Travel Trailer and make its way through town before ending at the Fire Station.
“We usually have several twirlette groups in the parade along with some floats,” said Shomo. “There’s always some fire trucks and we get a lot of old cars from the car show that morning.”
The Cirque Du Riviere Circus will also be set up downtown Harman and will begin performing at 2 p.m. The Circus will feature acrobats, tumblers, strongmen, magic and more.
The Soda Pop Gypsies will help cap off the day with a performance at the Fire Hall beginning at 7 p.m., and a fireworks display will begin at dark. For more information, call the Harman VFD at 304-227-4500.
