ELKINS -- The local chapter of the American Legion Riders will be holding a meet-and-greet for the local community on Saturday at Elkins City Park.
The group, which was established through the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, will serve hot dogs and hamburgers at the event, which is scheduled to begin at noon.
"We want to let the public know what we are about and what our goals are for the community," said chapter secretary Tammy McDonald. "This will allow those in the community to get to know us and learn more about the American Legion Riders."
The American Legion Riders are well-known across the county for their charitable work. There are currently more than 110,000 members in the more than 2,000 chapters in the United States and three foreign countries.
The local 10-member committee includes Mike Valdez, Bobby Poyner, Tim Shreve Jr., Liz Blackburn, Tim Shreve Sr., McDonald, Sammy Miller, John Miller, Steve Wilt and Christine Mallow. Valdez has been chosen as president of the group.
Applications to join the American Legion Riders will be available during the meet-and-greet. New members looking to join the organization don't have to have a motorcycle; they only need to have a street legal vehicle that is not a car or truck.
