ELKINS -- One person was transported by helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown after sustaining injuries in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Corridor H near the Norton exit.
According to a release from Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon, deputies were dispatched to the accident scene where it was determined that a 2007 Ford Escape failed to yield while turning off of Rt. 151 and on to US 33.
The Escape was struck on the driver's side by a 2019 Toyota 4Runner that was traveling east on US 33 and was unable to stop to avoid the collision, according to the release.
The driver of the 4Runner was transported to Davis Medical Center to be treated for injuries by the Randolph County Emergency Squad. The driver of the Escape, meanwhile, was flown by a Healthnet Helicopter to Morgantown.
"The driver of the Escape was trapped in the vehicle for a while before they could get him out," Elbon told The Inter-Mountain. "It was one of the toughest extrications I have seen in a while.
"The whole body of the car was in pretty bad shape. The driver had a broken right leg, it was a compound fracture and it was pretty bad so they flew him out."
Assisting the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, Randolph County EMS and Healthnet at the scene were the Coalton Fire Department, the Junior Fire Department and the West Virginia State Police.
All four lanes of Corridor H were delayed for some time near the Norton exit Wednesday morning due to the wreck.
