BUCKHANNON -- The 26th annual Upshur County Relay for Life hits the big top with carnival games, raffles up for grab and food for sale at Jawbone Park this Saturday.
Upshur County's Relay for Life returns June 24 at Jawbone Park with the theme of Carnival of Hope, "signifying the hope that Relay for Life participants have for a cure to be found."
Participants can expect twirling exhibits, exercise exhibits, musicians, a crazy hat contest and skipping contest, and more at this year's Relay.
"We're going to make this a fun event while also raising money to fund cancer research," said Upshur County Relay for Life Chair Robin Oldaker.
Cancer survivors and a guest are invited to a survivor reception at 5:30 p.m. under the big top of the tent.
The main event begins at 6 p.m. with speakers and music all leading up to the survivors' walk, where those currently living with cancer or survivors take a celebratory lap. After the survivors' walk, caregivers are invited to join the survivors in walking. All attendees of the event are asked to line the track during and cheer on the survivors and caregivers.
The luminaria service will begin afterward, where candles are lit in honor of those who are fighting cancer or who have passed away. As music plays, Relay participants spend a few minutes walking and remembering those whose names are on the bags.
This year's event will wrap up at 10 p.m.
Awards will be announced at Relay Wrap-up on Aug. 10 at Chapel Hill UMC at 6 p.m.
New teams and volunteers are welcome. Those wanting to get involved in Relay for Life may call Robin Oldaker at 304-940-1577, email upshurelay@gmail.com or contact the Upshur County Relay for Life Facebook page.
