ELKINS -- The Augusta Heritage Center will kick off its 50th year of Summer Heritage Workshops with a three-week series of events beginning Monday.
"Reaching our 50th year is a testament to the enduring power and relevance of Appalachian folkways," said Augusta Heritage Center CEO Seth Young.
"We are immensely proud to have served as a gathering place for generations of artists, musicians and cultural enthusiasts. This anniversary is a celebration of the countless stories, skills and traditions that have been preserved and shared through the Augusta workshops."
As part of Augusta's 50th anniversary, the organization has planned a full month of dances and concerts featuring world-renowned artists. Those events will take place every Tuesday and Thursday, and on the July 29 finale. Social dances will also be held at least three nights every week.
"These public ticketed events, along with Augusta's mini-classes, and four-day classes that meet for an hour each day in the evenings, are an excellent way for someone from the area to experience Augusta after work," said Young. "Each of these public events offers easy access to the wonderful resources Augusta brings to Elkins."
Since its inception, visitors from across the country have taken part in the renowned institution's traditions, which include the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of Appalachia.
"It's very meaningful to me to be carrying Augusta into its next 50 years," said Augusta's chief creative officer, Emily Miller. "Augusta has meant so much to me over the years both as a student and a teacher.
"I am looking forward to many magical dances in the pavilion, the top-notch concerts, and to jamming with some of the amazing musicians who are coming to join us at the Augusta workshops this summer."
Workshops, concerts, jam sessions and other events showcasing the diversity and depth of culture from Appalachia and beyond will be featured during the celebration. The organization's goal is to foster a deep appreciation for the arts and crafts, music, dance, storytelling and culinary traditions that define the region.
All of this year's events will take place on the campus of Davis & Elkins College and will feature master artisans and musicians who have dedicated their lives to preserving and passing down traditional skills and knowledge.
The workshops will offer a wide range of topics that include music, crafts, cooking and more. Participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while forming lasting friendships within the tight-knit Appalachian arts community.
