ELKINS -- One of the leading medical cannabis dispensary companies in the United States plans to open an Elkins location sometime during the month of August.

Work continues on the new Greenlight Dispensary facility, which will be located on the Beverly Five-lane just across the road from Crazy Harry's Country Market.

"Right now we are looking at opening the dispensary sometime around the middle of August," Shawna Hopkins, West Virginia Greenlight regional manager, told The Inter-Mountain on Wednesday.

"The opening date is all going to depend on when the state will be available to do the commencement. But we also want to make sure we have everything in place when we officially open."

The Elkins Greenlight Dispensary will be the company's sixth facility in West Virginia. The other locations are in Lewisburg, Beckley, Bluefield, Princeton and Stollings.

"We chose Elkins for the new dispensary based on the need of this area," Hopkins said. "If anyone needs help getting their medical card, they are welcome to visit us. We also have a QR code up on the side of the building, and if people scan that code, it will give them a discounted rate for the office visit."

Hopkins said that Greenlight Dispensaries partners with Elevate Holistics, which provides physicians through TeleMed office visits for those seeking a medical cannabis card.

"Elevate Holistics fills out the state application for customers and after they pay a state fee, it generally takes about two weeks for them to get their medical card," Hopkins said.

Greenlight also has facilities in Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and South Dakota.

The company has more than 30 cannabis dispensary licenses across the country and more than 150,000 square feet of cultivation and manufacturing.

The new location in Elkins will employ about five people, including one employee who will be a general manager and another who will be an assistant manager. Hopkins said the new employees will be making "way more" than minimum wage when they first start out.

Although the location isn't officially open, Hopkins said citizens are welcome to stop by the facility and get any information they may need from the dispensary.

"If anyone is here at the dispensary, we will be happy to give people any information they need," she said. "So if anyone is driving by the store and sees some of us here, feel free to stop by and we will answer any questions you may have."
