ELKINS -- After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Elkins Main Street Heritage and Horizon Awards reception will make its return on Monday, Aug. 14.
"Because we weren't able to hold the reception the past three years because to COVID, we will be honoring recipients from 2020, 2021, and 2022," Elkins Main Street executive director Lissa Eason told The Inter-Mountain.
"With COVID there weren't a lot of things we couldn't do, just not Main Street, but everyone. So it's good to start having things for the community again where they can get out and enjoy themselves."
Eason said she couldn't release the names of the recipients, but noted there will be three times as many winners than usual.
"This is going to be a pretty big event, because we usually have just two recipients," said Eason. "This time around we have six recipients, three for Heritage and three for Horizon. They are local businesses and we are excited to celebrate and honor them."
The event will be offered at the Arts Center on Park Street and will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 14.
Tickets for the celebration can be obtained through Main Street's Facebook page.
Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served at the event and there will be a wine and beer bar, along with live music.
"The Heritage Awards are for long-standing businesses, those who have been with our community for a while," said Eason. "The Horizon Awards are for the new businesses that have opened up in the last few years. I'm happy to say that all of those who were elected in 2020 and 2021 are still with us, which is great. They are going to be Heritage before they know it."
Wish Awake, a duo featuring Stephanie and Leskie Tompkins, will perform live at the celebration. Each award winner will receive a plaque that was designed by Judy Van Gundy. The awards are stained glass plaques that feature a log-cabin quilt pattern.
"The awards are just beautiful. Judy is an amazing artist and she did a great job on them, " said Eason. "We want everyone to come out, celebrate with us and have a great time. This is going to be a fun social gathering where everyone can get out of the house and come together. We'll have some great food and nice music for everyone to enjoy."
