PARSONS -- The Tucker County Animal Shelter recently received a pleasant surprise when the Kingsford Manufacturing Company donated more than 7,350 pounds of cat litter to the facility.
The litter was donated in the memory of Connor Joe Nestor, a young man who passed away at Davis Medical Center in Elkins after he was found seriously injured on Graceland Drive back in August of last year.
"Connor's father works at Kingsford and they use the Scoop Away cat litter for oil leaks and things like that at the plant," Tucker County Animal Control Officer Stacey Canfield told The Inter-Mountain Tuesday. "His mother found a way to get the cat litter donated to the shelter and we really appreciate it."
Canfield said the amount of cat litter received from Kingsford will go a long way toward helping the facility in a variety of different ways.
"It was really huge for us," she said. "We will be able to do some raffles with it and we are currently doing a raffle right now to help raise money for a new facility. We have been able to distribute some of the litter out to some of our fosters who are fostering kittens for us – it's just been an absolute huge help to us."
Nestor graduated from Tucker County High School in 2018. He attended Randolph Technical Center School of Practical Nursing for his LPN License and completed his LPN Certification in April of 2022.
"Connor wanted to eventually go into some type of vet science," said Canfield. "He went to nursing school and was really, really passionate about animals, specifically cats. That's why his mom decided to donate cat litter to help our cats more than our dogs, because he was really, really keen on cats."
The Tucker County Animal Shelter currently has 26 cats and seven dogs available for adoption.
"All of our animals are available for adoption and we do require an application for anyone wanting to adopt," said Canfield. "The application can either be done online or in person. We just confirm that any other animals in the home have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and kept up to date on all of their core vaccines."
TCAS officials said many of Nestor's loved ones have made donations to the Friends of the Tucker County Animal Shelter in his memory.
