MONTROSE -- A Randolph County man is behind bars after he allegedly shot a rifle at a vehicle containing an individual on Sunday.
Henry David Cottrell, 60, has been charged with felony wanton endangerment and is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Mike Dyer.
According to the criminal complaint, Randolph County Sheriff's Department, deputies and Division of Natural Resources Police responded to a complaint of gunshots fired at the intersection of Grass Lick Run and Witek Drive.
Once on scene, contact was made with an individual who advised officers he was waiting to meet his girlfriend in his vehicle at a residence on Witek Drive. The individual told law enforcement that Cottrell shot at him twice by the residence he was waiting at, according to the complaint.
Contact was made with Cottrell at his residence, also on Witek Drive, and he was detained in handcuffs, the complaint states. Cotrell told officers after he heard a motor vehicle engine running outside his residence, he stepped outside and fired two shots from his .30-06 rifle.
According to the complaint, he told police that he fired the rounds into the air in the direction of the vehicle engine he heard at the end of his driveway. He told authorities that after he fired the shots he shouted, "Don't —- with me, stand around my house with the damned Indian running."
The complaint states Cottrell indicated that he had never spoken to or been threatened by the occupant of the vehicle. He stated that he never observed a vehicle or person actually in his driveway prior to firing the gunshots.
A spent .30-06 shell casing was recovered at the scene along with a loaded Remington model 742 semi-automatic .30-06 caliber rifle.
