Artists At Work celebrating anniversary

ELKINS — Artists At Work is celebrating its 30th anniversary and will take part in two events hosted by a pair of local organizations later this month.

First up for Artists At Work, which is a downtown co-operative gallery and shop for fine arts and crafts, will be a “Business Made Social” event hosted by the Elkins-Randolph County Chamber.

The “Meet, Mingle, See, Sip and Munch” gathering will be Aug. 25 and is free to the public. The event will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Artist At Work’s location at 329 Davis Ave. as the gallery celebrates 30 years of art, craft, creativity and joy in downtown Elkins.

This second celebration will be on the following day, Aug. 26, when Elkins Main Street hosts “Artmania by Artists At Work” on Davis Avenue. The family event is also free and open to the public.

The “Artmania” event will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the third and fourth blocks of Davis Avenue. The celebration will be an afternoon of art, creativity and play in downtown Elkins.

“We are holding this event to celebrate the 30 years that Artists At Work have been doing what they do,” Elkins Main Street executive director Lissa Eason told The Inter-Mountain. “Davis Avenue will be blocked off from Second to Fourth Street and lined up on the sidewalks will be a variation of artists, music and other different things.”

Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to experience hands-on art and listen to live musical performers. There will be art, craft, and dance demos as the community comes together for the block party celebration.

“We have a lot of great artists coming out and they are going to be doing a lot of hands-on art. They are going to have about a 9-foot panel that the kids can interact with and create some art that will be displayed by the Elkins Sewing Center,” she said. “So the kids will be able to come at any time and see what they created, so that will be a lot of fun.”

Artists At Work was formed as a co-operative of five individual artists in the summer of 1993 and quickly expanded to 20 before moving to its current location on Davis Avenue the following year.

Nearly 100 artists have participated as members in the co-op over the past three decades. That list includes many of the area’s finest and award-winning artists and craftsmen.

Artists At Work, which is the longest and continuously existing artists’ co-op in the state of West Virginia, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information visit the Artists At Work Facebook page.

Starting at $3.92/week.
