COALTON -- A group of volunteers with the St. Patrick's Parish will be selling meatball hoagies as a fundraiser for Randolph County Commissioner Chris See Friday at the Beverly Fire Hall.
The sale will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All the money collected will help with See's medical expenses that were not covered by insurance following a recent surgery.
"Chris has always been a friend of everyone and we heard that he was having a lot of medical issues," Jim Rossi, St. Patrick's church member and mayor of Coalton, told The Inter-Mountain Monday. "So we reached out to him and told him what we were planning to do. This is something we really wanted to do for him."
Rossi said See frequently attended all of St. Patrick's events and used to live in Coalton. He added that his relationship with See goes back many years.
"Chris lived in our area for a while and then moved back up the valley," said Rossi. "I taught at Tygarts Valley High School and had Chris' two children in class. They are a very good family."
The St. Patrick's Guild of Coalton does fundraisers throughout the year and is well known for their spaghetti dinners held at the church's hall. Each year the Guild also presents a meatball hoagie sale to help benefit the Tygart Valley United Way.
Rossi said the St. Patrick's Guild will make between 2,500 to 3,000 meatballs for Friday's event.
"That will put us around the 14,000 range for meatballs we've made this year," he said. "We had a really good turnout for the United Way event we had back in January. We had a guy from Barbour County drive all the way up to Elkins just to buy two of them. He said he couldn't wait to get back to Belington so he ate one on the way home."
The sauce and meatballs for the hoagies will be made from the famous recipe area residents have come to know and love.
"Everything we make is from the old-world recipe and is made from scratch," Rossi said. "We've had to do some modifying over the years because we do so much at one time, but you have to get the right blend to get the flavor. You don't want one spice overwhelming them all. It's somewhat of an art."

"Chris is always doing something to help other people out, so we are happy to be giving him a hand with the medical expenses that have been piling up on him," said Rossi. "He's not been able to work, which is not Chris See. You know, he's always working. We're hoping to get enough people out to help him."
