BEVERLY -- An organizer said a meatball hoagie fundraising sale was a "huge success" thanks to "overwhelming support from the community."

The event, a fundraiser for Randolph County Commissioner Chris See, was offered Aug. 11 at the Beverly Fire Hall. A group of volunteers with the St. Patrick's Parish prepared their beloved cuisine for the event, including meatball hoagies.

"We sold 750 meatball hoagies on Friday," one of the event's organizers, Imre Barsy, told The Inter-Mountain. "All together, we grossed more than $9,000 in overall sales. In all respects, it was a huge success.

"On Friday we had people standing in line from one end of the building all the way through to the other end," he said. "The response to this event just showed overwhelming support from the community."

The money raised through the sale will help with See's medical expenses that were not covered by insurance following a recent surgery.

The St. Patrick's Guild of Coalton does fundraisers throughout the year and is well known for their spaghetti dinners held at the church's hall. Each year the Guild also presents a meatball hoagie sale to help benefit the Tygart Valley United Way.

Officials had said the St. Patrick's Guild planned to make between 2,500 to 3,000 meatballs for Friday's event. The sauce and meatballs for the hoagies were made from the famous recipe area residents have come to know and love.

Beginning in the early 1980s, a group of well-known Italian cooks including Irene DeMotto, Mary Butch, Anne Polce, Josephine Alteri and one of their Ricottilli friends served as the nucleus of initiating the spaghetti dinners. At their first feed, approximately 400 dinners were served. Today, it is not uncommon for three times that number to stand in line and wait to enjoy authentic Olde World sauce and meatballs.
