BEVERLY – An Ohio man is behind bars after police reportedly found more than 100 grams of suspected controlled substances in his vehicle during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
David L. McGowan, 39, from Akron, Ohio was arrested for possession with intent to deliver. He is currently lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Tracy Harper.
According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 6:15 a.m. Saturday morning, a 911 call was reported of an irate male at the Hampton Inn in Elkins. Hotel personnel advised that the subject had left the scene after law enforcement was called.
The complaint states that hotel staff described what the man looked like and what kind of vehicle he was driving. Randolph County Sheriff's deputies responded to the disturbance and attempted to locate the vehicle.
Deputy Lance Elbon observed a matching vehicle in the Beverly area and Deputy Tyler Knotts performed a traffic stop at the Fast Break Food Mart, according to the complaint.
Knotts advised that he detected the odor of marijuana and alcohol from the vehicle. The driver, later identified as McGowan, was irate with officers about the traffic stop, the arrest complaint states. McGowan had to be physically placed in a patrol unit after he refused to sit in it on his own.
Knotts and his K-9 officer conducted a free air sniff around the vehicle, and a positive indication for the presence of controlled substances was detected by the K-9, according to the complaint.
During a search of the vehicle, officers located a suspected drug ledger, a digital scale, suspected marijuana, approximately 52.5 grams of suspected fentanyl and approximately 57 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
