PHILIPPI -- Junior Elementary School's students met the standard for math, but the Barbour County School System as a whole scored below the state average in both math and English Language Arts in the state's Balanced Scorecard results for the 2022-23 school year.
As a whole, Barbour County's public school students tested at 48% in English Language Arts, which is below the standard. Statewide, students tested at 55%, which partially met the standard.
Barbour students tested at 46% in math, which is below the standard. Statewide, students tested at 51% in math, which partially met the standard.
The statistics were released as part of the statewide Balanced Scorecard, provided by the West Virginia Department of Education. The Balanced Scorecard process has been in place since the 2017-18 school year.
At the grade school level in Barbour County, one school met the standard for math: Junior Elementary School at 70%.
Two other Barbour elementary schools partially met the standard for math: Belington Elementary scored 57%, while Philippi Elementary scored 54%.
In addition, Junior Elementary partially met the standard for English Language Arts: Junior Elementary School at 64%.
The other Barbour grade schools did not meet the standard for ELA: Philippi Elementary at 47%, and Belington Elementary at 44%.
Kasson Elementary/Middle School did not meet the standard for ELA, scoring 46%, or for math, at 48%.
Belington Middle School partially met the standard for ELA, at 53%, but did not meet the standard for math, at 50%.
Philippi Middle School did not meet the standard for ELA, at 43%, or for math, at 36%.
Barbour County's only high school, Philip-Barbour High, did not meet the standard for ELA, at 46%, or for math, at 39%.
According to the Balanced Scorecard, Barbour County's public schools have a total enrollment of 2,147. The county's attendance rate is 91%, while the graduation rate is 93%.
Between federal, state and local allocations, a total of $12,773.52 is spent per student in Barbour County's public schools, according to the Balanced Scorecard information.
