Philippi nonprofit to receive $487K grant

PHILIPPI -- A non-profit organization based in Philippi will receive a $487,500 Appalachian Regional Commission grant to aid in substance abuse recovery, officials announced Monday.
The funding is part of nearly $14 million the ARC will provide to 43 projects through its Investments Supporting Partnerships In Recovery Ecosystems (INSPIRE) Initiative, which aims to address Appalachia's substance use disorder crisis with investments in projects that create or expand services in the recovery ecosystem leading to workforce entry and re-entry.
"At ARC, we know that substance use disorder recovery isn't a singular event, but a continuum. Both workforce training and ending the stigma surrounding substance use disorder are equally important in providing a renewed sense of hope and purpose to Appalachians in recovery," said ARC Federal Co-Chair Gayle Manchin.
"These INSPIRE grantees are doing the important work to remove all barriers to entry when it comes to recovery-to-work projects across the region, ensuring that all Appalachians have a chance at a bright future."
An INSPIRE grant of $487,500 will go to New Vision Renewable Energy in Philippi for the Next Gen Employment and Eco System Development Project of West Virginia. The project will focus on young adult males recovering from substance abuse disorder and aging out of the foster care system in some of West Virginia's most distressed counties.
Building on an ARC INSPIRE planning grant awarded in 2022, New Vision plans to use a collaborative team-based model to provide hands-on vocational training in the construction and woodworking industries, as well as employment, transportation, housing, and social and mental health
supports for this at-risk population.
Through partnerships with the Barbour County Development Authority, Marshall University, Mullens and Mullens Law Firm, the Human Resources Development Foundation, Coalfield Development, and many others, NVRE expects to improve 18 workers/trainees and 15 businesses that hire program participants.
New Vision is a faith-based community development group that uses renewable energy, particularly solar, to "help people help themselves."
