Randolph scores below state average

ELKINS — The Randolph County School System finished below the state average in both math and English Language Arts in the state’s Balanced Scorecard results for the 2022-23 school year.

In Randolph County’s public schools as a whole, students tested at 48% for English Language Arts, which is below the standard. Statewide, students tested at 55%, which partially met the standard.

Randolph students tested at 43% in math, which is below the standard. Statewide, students tested at 51% in math, which partially met the standard.

The statistics were released as part of the statewide Balanced Scorecard, provided by the West Virginia Department of Education. The Balanced Scorecard process has been in place since the 2017-18 school year.

At the grade school level, in Randolph County, one school met the standard for English Language Arts: Midland Elementary, at 65%.

One Randolph grade school partially met the standard for ELA: Jennings Randolph, at 51%.

The remaining Randolph grade schools did not meet the standard for ELA: Third Ward at 47%, George Ward at 47%, North at 46%, Coalton at 46% and Beverly at 39%.

One Randolph grade school met the standard for math, Midland at 67%, while two grade schools partially met the standard: Third Ward at 51% and George Ward at 50%.

The other Randolph grade schools did not meet the standard for math, including Jennings Randolph at 49%, North Elementary at 47%, Coalton at 44% and Beverly at 39%.

Among the county’s two 12-year schools, Pickens partially met the standard for ELA, at 59%, while Harman did not meet the standard, at 43%.

Neither of the 12-year schools met the standard for math, with Pickens scoring 39% and Harman scoring 37%.

Elkins Middle School partially met the standard for ELA, at 50%, but did not meet the standard for math, at 40%.

Among Randolph’s two high schools, Elkins High partially met the standard for ELA, at 52%, but Tygarts Valley High/Middle did not meet the standard, scoring 41%.

Neither high school met the standard for math, as Elkins High scored 39% and Tygarts Valley scored 34%.

According to the Balanced Scorecard, Randolph County’s public schools have a total enrollment of 3,634. The county’s attendance rate is 91%, while the graduation rate is 93%.

Between federal, state and local allocations, a total of $13,485.93 is spend per student in Randolph County’s public schools, according to the Balanced Scorecard information.
