ELKINS -- Materials have been handed out for the scarecrows that will be on display in downtown Elkins for three weeks during the month of September.
Our Town Inc. is once again heading up the Scarecrow Festival, and volunteers from the organization recently distributed the necessary building materials for 46 of the 50 fall-time figures that will be standing alongside several city streets.
"Everything went really well during the distribution and we ended up having material left for just four of the scarecrows," Our Town volunteer Bobbi Trimboli told The Inter-Mountain. "It seems like everyone still likes to do this project and we are happy that they do. We are excited to do another fun thing downtown for everyone to see and participate in."
The Scarecrow Festival was created by Our Town as a fun way for the community to celebrate the arrival of autumn. Each year the straw figures are decorated by local businesses, groups and individuals during the fall promotion.
Trimboli said corn stalks are being added to the displays this year.
"Last year the corn stalks were a little too dry by the time we put the scarecrows up," she said. "But this year Phil Riggleman has been very gracious in helping us. When he finishes cutting his corn he is going to cut our stalks down and we will go out and put them together.
"The stalks will back the scarecrows to help give them a better fall look. Sue and Holt Chenoweth are also donating corn stalks to us, as well as Richard and Betsy Smith if we need extras."
Those constructing scarecrows are asked to return their designs to the Dann Building on Third Street on Saturday. They will be collected from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will remain standing until they are taken down on Sept. 30. Those wishing to keep their scarecrows will need to remove them before 9 a.m. on Sept. 30.
"We will be out and about putting the scarecrows and corn stalks up on Saturday," said Trimboli. "I think we are going to be getting some help from the Boy Scouts and Mountain School."
